How to Print Custom Miniatures That Fit Your Scale

A 1:64 diecast build can look right until a figure is placed beside it. Suddenly, a driver is too tall for the door opening, a mechanic looks like a giant, or a seated passenger does not fit beneath the roofline. Learning how to print custom miniatures starts with solving those practical fit issues before the printer ever runs.

For dioramas, diecast photography, and display scenes, the best custom print is not necessarily the most detailed file on screen. It is the figure that matches the vehicle, pose, scene, and scale in your hand. That means choosing the right source file, scaling it correctly, printing it in a suitable resin, and finishing it without losing the small details that give a miniature personality.

Start With the Scale, Not the STL File

Scale is the first decision because it affects every step after it. A file may be advertised as 1:64, 28mm, or 54mm, but those labels are not always used consistently. Some sellers measure a figure from the sole of the foot to eye level. Others measure total height, including hair, hats, helmets, or a raised arm.

For a standing adult at 1:64 scale, a useful starting point is roughly 26 to 30mm tall, depending on the person’s real-world height and posture. A six-foot adult scales to about 28.6mm. That number is helpful, but it is not a rule that overrides the scene. A crouching photographer, seated driver, child, or bent-over mechanic should be smaller in overall height because of the pose.

Check the vehicle as well. Diecast cars labeled 1:64 can vary slightly between brands, especially around cabin size, wheel diameter, and interior room. Before printing a full set, use a basic reference body or a low-detail test figure. Place it next to the vehicle, at the door, or in the driver’s seat. A quick test can prevent a batch of figures that looks good on a ruler but wrong in a display.

The same approach applies when moving beyond 1:64. HO is generally 1:87, 1:32 military figures need more visible surface detail, 1:24 figures have room for stronger facial features, and 54mm figures are often sized by their own established gaming and military-model convention. Always work from a physical measurement rather than assuming one scale label translates perfectly to another.

How to Print Custom Miniatures From a Digital File

A printable STL is the starting point, not a finished miniature. If you are purchasing or creating a file, inspect the pose at full zoom before sending it to a slicer. Look for thin wrists, loose tools, narrow ankles, floating props, and deep folds that may trap uncured resin. These are the areas most likely to fail or become hard to clean.

If the file needs to be resized, scale all axes evenly. Changing only the height can make a figure unnaturally wide or thin. Most slicer programs allow uniform percentage scaling, which is the safer route. For example, if a standing file measures 32mm and your target height is 28mm, scale it to 87.5 percent.

Custom work is often more than simple resizing. You may need a figure holding a camera instead of a rifle, a crew member in a particular uniform, a person standing at a car meet, or a seated pose built for a specific interior. For those projects, provide clear reference photos and real measurements whenever possible. The more specific the request, the better the final fit. A photo of the vehicle beside a ruler, plus the desired pose and target scale, is far more useful than saying, “Make it small.”

Also confirm that you have the right to print the file. Some STL files are licensed for personal use only. If you plan to sell printed figures, use files that include commercial permission or commission original work.

Choose Resin Printing for Figure-Level Detail

For most human miniatures, resin printing is the better choice over filament printing. A resin printer can reproduce jacket seams, hands, facial structure, hair texture, camera straps, and small folds that would be difficult to achieve with a standard filament machine at 1:64 scale.

The trade-off is handling. Liquid resin requires gloves, ventilation, careful cleanup, and proper disposal practices. It is not a material to pour down a sink or throw away uncured. Follow the resin manufacturer’s safety instructions, keep your work area protected, and cure all waste before disposal where local rules allow.

Standard gray resin is a solid choice for test prints because it shows detail and defects clearly. Tough or ABS-like resin can be useful for figures with thin parts, such as outstretched arms, antenna-like tools, or separate accessories. Flexible resin is usually unnecessary for display figures and can make cleanup and painting more difficult.

Layer height should match the amount of detail you need. A fine layer setting can improve smooth curves on faces and clothing, but it increases print time. For most scale figures, the goal is not chasing the smallest possible number. The goal is a clean result with detail that remains visible after washing, curing, priming, and painting.

Orient the Figure to Protect the Visible Side

Orientation has a major effect on print quality. Printing a standing figure straight upright may seem logical, but it can create weak points at the ankles and leave visible layer lines on the front. Tilting the figure slightly, often around 20 to 45 degrees, helps distribute peel forces and can preserve the face and chest.

Place supports on less visible areas whenever possible: the back of the legs, lower back, underside of arms, or bottom of a base. Avoid heavy support contact on faces, hands, uniform patches, and the front of a shirt. Those details are difficult to repair at miniature scale.

Hollowing is useful for larger miniatures, but most 1:64 figures are small enough to print solid. Solid prints are simpler and eliminate concerns about trapped uncured resin inside a tiny cavity. For larger 1:24, 1:32, or 54mm figures, hollowing can save resin, but it requires correctly placed drain holes and thorough washing inside the model.

Run a small test first, especially when using a new resin, printer, or file source. A test print reveals whether supports are adequate and whether thin parts survive removal. Adjusting supports on one figure is easier than repairing ten failed prints.

Wash, Cure, and Clean Without Erasing Detail

Once printed, wash the figure according to the resin’s requirements. Remove excess resin from folds, underarms, between legs, and around separate accessories. A soft brush can help, but avoid aggressive scrubbing that snaps thin details.

Remove supports after washing but before final curing if your resin process allows it. At that stage, the material is usually firm enough to handle while still being slightly easier to trim cleanly. Use fine flush cutters or a sharp hobby blade, then lightly sand support marks with very fine grit only where needed.

Do not over-cure small figures. Too much UV exposure can make resin more brittle, which matters when a miniature has thin wrists, feet, or gear. Cure long enough for a fully dry, stable surface, then let the piece cool before handling it further.

Prime for Paint and Scene Use

Primer is where the print starts to read like a miniature instead of a resin part. A thin coat of gray, black, or white primer helps paint adhere and immediately exposes any leftover support marks. Gray is a practical all-purpose choice. Black can help with deeper shadows, while white makes bright colors easier to build.

Use thin paint layers. At 1:64 scale, heavy paint can fill in collar lines, hands, belt details, and facial features faster than you might expect. Focus on the details viewers notice first: clothing color blocks, skin tone, hair, shoes, and a little contrast around the face. For a diecast scene, a clean paint job with the correct colors often looks more convincing than an overworked figure with too many tiny highlights.

Consider the base or mounting method before painting. A standing figure may need a small peg, a hidden pin in one foot, or a flat base for secure placement. A seated figure may need the legs trimmed or repositioned to fit a specific car interior. Dry-fit the figure one last time before committing with glue.
